The first Christmas is a lot like life as we experience it now. It was anything but tame and orderly and sentimental and put together. It was wild. It was uncharted. It was terrifying. It was heartbreaking.
But it was also hopeful. And full of promise. Something revolutionary was taking place. And God was there.
The biblical account of Christmas is not an escape from real life. It is a window into the complexity and challenge that we all experience and can teach us a great deal about living in the real world.
